THERE IS NO JOY IN BONDAGE

behind bars

I would think that anyone who has ever spent any time behind bars in a jail/prison would readily agree that it is not pleasant. Having your freedom taken away is not something anyone would enjoy. The key word is “enjoy” and in the word enjoy we see the word JOY. When God created man He created us to be free and enjoy life. That is His will … what He wants and has for us. He doesn’t want us to be in bondage. Yet many of us are for one reason or another. As a result there is no joy … no true joy … in our lives.

In life there are rules we are to follow and obey. Rules are usually good and sensible. Sometimes man’s rules are not sensible, but God’s rules are always sensible. Even if we don’t understand or agree with them it doesn’t take anything away from the fact that they are good, proper and very much needed.

There are two approaches when it comes to  obeying God’s rules. One approach is “because we have to” (are supposed to or required to). I want to state upfront that there is no joy in this approach. People who are involved in religion are caught up in this approach. The other approach is “because we want to”. In this approach there is complete freedom and joy. People who know Jesus Christ and are in a personal relationship with Him have this approach. Therein lies the difference between religion and relationship.

I live near people of the Amish faith (religion). If ever there was a people who live in total bondage they most certainly do. They have a big long list of rules they have made which they require their people to abide by. Many of their rules are really ridiculous. And, like the Jewish people, they have managed to skirt around the rules considerably. They may use a small gasoline engine to do something most of us use electricity for. They may use air motors in place of electric motors. These air motors may be used to power all sorts of machinery … saws, lathes, drill presses, pumps, washing machines, etc. Many of their rules are to ensure that they don’t possess those things which are modern day technology … convenient and practical. And some of their rules are based on superstitious nonsense. They can use a cell phone but not a phone which uses a wire coming into their home. (The devil can come into their home thru the wire. … what utter foolishness!) Their lives are very controlled by their fellow man. In short, they are in bondage … a whole lot of bondage. They believe that if they live their lives depriving themselves of these things I speak of and live in a simple old fashioned way that it will somehow be pleasing to God and make them more acceptable to Him. Nothing could be further from the truth. God does not care about what we have. God cares about what has us! When we truly understand what Jesus Christ has done for us in taking our place dying a horrific death to pay the penalty for our sins then we can and will appreciate it and want to live our lives pleasing to Him … which means wanting to obey God’s rules.

God is a jealous God and He insists that we put Him first at all times. And He deserves to be first!

Jesus first

If all we have is a big long list of “do this” and “don’t do this” that we feel we must abide by then we will be most miserable and not at all living our lives in the liberty that is available thru a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Anyone who is familiar with the board game, Monopoly, knows about “go to jail” and “get out of jail free” cards. Jesus is our “get out of jail free” card. He alone can set us free!

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,  because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.  For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in sinful man,  in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:1-4

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, …” Luke 4:18

So if you find yourself living in bondage I invite you to use the “get out of jail free” card God offers you. If you remain in bondage all your life you can be sure that you will personally be the one who pays the wages of your sin … eternal damnation. And I guarantee you that there will be no joy in that either.
