It is said that people are living longer now than they used to. I won’t try to argue that … not unless we are talking about going a very long way back in man’s history. Before the biblical flood man lived over 900 years.
As far as recent times … say in my life time (I am presently 67 years old) most definitely there are more people living longer than was the case when I was younger. That being the case I want to throw a monkey wrench into the the scenario. I check the obituaries almost daily and pay attention to the ages shown of those who have passed on into eternal life. Most certainly I see lots of people listed as being in their 80s and 90s … even a few 100s. My own dad died at 93. However I also see lots of people shown as dying in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. I decided to try something out of curiosity. I recorded all the ages of all those listed in the obituaries. I added them all up and then divided that number by the number of deceased individuals. The average age was 71.12 years. I want to call your attention to this figure because I want to point out that God has said in His word that the average lifespan of man is 70 – 80 years (Psalm 90:10). There are certain locations in the world where the people live longer that this on average, but averaging out all of mankind thruout the world I think you will find the figure is still in the 70 to 80 year range. Even the secular sources state that the average life expectancy for man is about 78 years now. Why am I mentioning this you ask? I don’t know. I just think it is somewhat interesting. When I hear people say that we are living longer today than we did many years ago I think of this. Yes, many do, but the average is still according to what God has said! And yes, everybody has eternal life. It is just a matter of where we will be spending it. We have a choice!
